They may have started out as good friends, but these days Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes are one of pop music’s most talked-about couples. While there are some naysayers online who think it’s all about publicity, the two singers appear to be going strong. Now fans are analyzing every move they make and every lyric they sing to try to learn more about the relationship they call #Shawmila. But how did we get here? Let’s take a look back at how Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes’s relationship began. July 2014Cabello (as a member of Fifth Harmony) and Mendes meet while they are both opening acts for Austin Mahone’s tour. The singers discussed that time with V Magazine. “I remember thinking we met on the Austin Mahone tour, and I remember I wanted to hang out with you, but you were always on the tour bus, just learning guitar,” Cabello said. Mendes replied, “Yeah, that was me. I didn’t talk to anybody. You were the only person that talked to me. Like, you were the only one of everybody on that tour who would say words to me. Actually, I think if we go into our DMs or something, there’s a photo from the day we met, I think.“And I thought you were out of your mind,” he continued. “I’d be in my bus where no one could see me. I’d be looking through the window and I’d see you, like, flying around on a scooter and jumping and doing cartwheels. I’d be like, She’s insane. Close the window and go to sleep.”April 2015Mendes plays a game of “Lips, Wife, or Leave It” and opts for Cabello as the “wife” over Chloë Grace Moretz and Jade Thirwall from Little Mix. “Yeah, she rocks,” he said.November 2015Cabello and Mendes drop a song called “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” which sparks dating rumors. “We were just backstage hanging out,” Mendes told Rolling Stone of how they wrote the song while on Taylor Swift’s 1989 tour. “I pulled out my guitar and we were just messing around, not really thinking about writing a song.”Mendes and Cabello perform at the 2015 Jingle Ball in LA.Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic/Getty ImagesMarch 2017Cabello and Mendes post a video of themselves covering Ed Sheeran’s song “Kiss Me.”May 2017Mendes tweets about Cabello’s song “Crying in the Club.” “Speechless.. goosebumps all over. You’re incredible,” he wrote.April 2018The social media lovefest continues. During an interview with Beats 1, Mendes calls Cabello his “favorite person in the whole world.”“I don’t think you’ll ever meet somebody who can feel emotion like her, in all aspects,” he continued. “She can feel hurt like no other, but she can feel love like no other.”Cabello responded on Twitter, “i shouldn’t be crying at this time in the morning but I AM 😭💜😭 i love you SO much @ShawnMendes.”A few days later, she popped up at a Mendes show.December 2018Fans get excited as Cabello hints at a possible collaboration by posting a photo of herself (with a guitar) and Mendes sitting on the floor. “Canadian fury + Latin sass,” she wrote in the caption.June 2019The pair drops “Señorita” and relationship speculation starts anew thanks to lyrics like “You say we’re just friends/But friends don’t know the way you taste / ’Cause you know it’s been a long time coming / Don’t you let me fall” and a very steamy music video.July 2019The PDA begins as Mendes and Cabello are spotted holding hands in West Hollywood. They also partied together on the 4th of July. They were caught kissing by TMZ in San Francisco. “They looked very into each other. Shawn and Camila were splitting pancakes,” a source told Us Weekly about the encounter.James Devaney/GC Images/Getty ImagesAugust 2019Mendes turns 21 and celebrates by making out with Cabello at his party, which a partygoer posts to Instagram. She professed her love for him on the ’Gram, as well. “Happy birthday to this magic human, I love you!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️,” she said. Also that month, Cabello talks about falling in love and writing music in a new interview—though she doesn’t specifically mention Mendes in that context. “Falling in love is like an infinite amount of levels and layers and angles,” she said. “I fell in love and just opened up. Everything was written in present moment.”The reported couple wrapped up the month with a very sexy performance of “Señorita” at the VMAs. Even Taylor Swift was shook.Jeff Kravitz/Getty ImagesSeptember 2019Mendes finally confirms that he’s in a relationship. “Honestly, I wanna say I wanna talk to you guys about this stuff, but it’s not just me in the relationship,” he said when asked about whether he’s ever been in love. “There’s another person involved, and I can’t say things that I feel. It’s not just me deciding, you know?”That same month, Cabello gives another interview to Elle about Mendes: “People can say whatever they want to say. They can speculate, but at the same time, we are going to live our own lives, enjoy it, and fall for each other like nobody is watching. That is how I want to live. I never want to open the door for people to feel like they are involved. Like I said, I want it to be mine and [his]. That’s why I’m so tight-lipped about it: because I want to protect it.”On September 12, the couple posts an Instagram video of themselves making out, well, sort of. “So we saw, like on Twitter and stuff, you guys saying stuff about how we were kissing and that it looks weird, that we kiss like fish…and we just want to show you how we really kiss,” Mendes says. Cabello adds, “It really hurt our feelings.”Then they proceed to jokingly kiss and lick each other’s faces in a bit of self-parody. See for yourself below. On September 19, a TMZ camera crew caught Mendes walking through the terminal at LAX, where he told them the couple’s relationship is “definitely not a publicity stunt.”He also confirmed that he’s met his girlfriend’s parents. “Camila’s parents? I’ve known them a long time,” he said.On September 27, a fan asked Mendes a very poignant question about his love life during a pre-concert Q&A: “Have you ever loved someone who didn’t love you and what would you do?”His response? “If I told you the whole story of Camila, it would take a long time. I would say that you have to fight for someone you really love. And if you really, truly love them, then you’ll get them. It just takes time.”But it looks like the singer’s patience definitely paid off.October 2019In an interview with the U.K.’s Capital Breakfast radio show on October 3, Cabello gives what might be her most public declaration of love yet—literally, she publicly declares her love for him. “We’re pretty happy,” she said after the host brought up her relationship with Mendes. “I really, really love him a lot.”In an interview with Britain’s The Sun, Cabello opens up about why getting into a relationship with Mendes was risky due to their preexisting friendship. “It’s almost more scary because you have more to lose,” she said. “When you first start dating a person and you know nothing about them, there’s less at risk there. I think when you fall in love with somebody you’ve known for a long time, there’s more at stake. But it also feels more special because it feels like the love story you see in the movies of people who have known each other for a long time but been too stupid to realize it or say it and then it happens—and that’s beautiful too.”But even back when they first met, she now says there was a spark. “Definitely there were feelings, but I think we were just too young to know what to do with them,” Cabello said.During a concert in Australia, Mendes reveals that he and Cabello haven’t been dating “that long.” He told fans, “We have been dating since July 4th officially,” per People.November 2019On November 11, the couple sat courtside at an NBA game between the L.A. Clippers and the Toronto Raptors—and they were not afraid to show their affection for each other.Allen Berezovsky/Getty ImagesAllen Berezovsky/Getty ImagesWe love the reaction of the woman sitting next to them, by the way.Allen Berezovsky/Getty ImagesOn November 18, Rolling Stone published an interview with Cabello, who couldn’t stop gushing about her man. Though she did admit that things were just a little bit awkward in the beginning stages of their epic romance. While collaborating on the hit “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” Cabello says, she “really bonded with him as more than a friend.” She added, “I think he did too, but we were both really young, and he was experiencing the pressures of his career. I don’t think we knew what to do with those feelings. It was this awkward thing where we both liked each other, but we weren’t together. It was just weird.” According to Cabello, there was a definite energy between the pair right from the start, but “after that song, we didn’t spend as much time together.” Luckily, they reconnected thanks to the song “Señorita.”“Our paths just didn’t cross in that way romantically until we started hanging out again and writing. For me, it just brought it back,” the singer explained. On November 26, Cabello chatted with BBC Radio 1’s Greg James and responded to everyone criticizing her PDA with Mendes—particularly when she and her beau posted a make-out video to Instagram. When a fan called in with an “unpopular opinion” claiming “public displays of affection on Instagram are too much,” the 22-year-old took it personally according to Us Weekly.“Ouch. Well, I feel personally targeted. I feel personally attacked,” Cabello said, adding sarcastically, “Yeah, PDA is terrible. Kissing in public? I don’t even….”The “Liar” singer went on to defend her actions with Mendes, saying that living her life in the public eye—and repeatedly being targeted by paparazzi—has made her care less about sharing her intimate moments on social media.“You honestly get kind of desensitized to it. You’re like, ‘Well, might as well just make out on Instagram!’” she said. We’re not complaining, Camila.December 2019On December 5, Cabello finally shared the real reason she and Mendes don’t kiss on stage during their steamy “Señorita” performances.“I actually just get shy, weirdly,” she told Extra. “I feel like I would kiss him in the dress rehearsal, but then we are onstage and then something stops me.”Then, during an interview on Ellen, Cabello admitted she and Mendes were “babies” about their feeling towards each other. In fact, she said she had a “crush” on the Canadian crooner years before the two made things official.“I for sure had a crush…. We were stupid. I think we both had a crush, but were being babies about it,” she said. “But we’re grown now! But I definitely, definitely, definitely had a crush.”The 22-year-old pop star also stopped by The Tonight Show where she told Jimmy Fallon how difficult it was for her to call her boyfriend “baby” during their friendship-to-romance transition. She explained, “It took me, like, two months to be able to call him ‘baby.’ I didn’t want to say his name because we were dating and I couldn’t say ‘baby,’ so I’d just be like, ‘Hey! You! Hand me that water over there?’“It’s so funny because when we first started going out, it’s so weird…[dating] somebody who was your friend for a really long time,” Cabello added. “The people around you already know them because you’ve known them for a long time, so it’s just like, ‘Now we kiss and hold hands.’”March 2020Cabello and Mendes spent the early months of the coronavirus pandemic quarantining together. They took many, many walks and also hopped onto Instagram Live to answer questions from fans and perform some music. October 2020In the trailer for his Netflix documentary Wonder (coming out November 23), Mendes reveals that all his songs are about Cabello. “My song comes on the radio or something, and I’m like, ‘Everything’s about you. They’re all, they have always been about you,’” he says. “She goes, ‘What do you mean?’ Like, ‘They’re all about you. Like every song I’ve ever wrote.’”The couple also posted these PDA-filled photos. On October 31, Cabello and Mendes both shared photos on Instagram in celebration of Halloween—including a super sweet one that sees them locking lips. November 2020:In his new Netflix documentary, Shawn Mendes: In Wonder, the couple revealed a bunch of details about their relationship. Here are the highlights:
- Mendes doesn’t think he’ll be able do their relationship “justice” in a song. “I don’t think I’ll be able to write songs that really do it justice, that can really capture the things and the feelings with her,” Mendes said, per Elle. “I think it’s like when you see a moon or stars and you try to take a photo of it with your iPhone, and then you just can’t, it just doesn’t look good. And you’re like, ‘It’s not supposed to be captured.’ You know? It’s just supposed to be for us.”
- They shared a sweet moment before that steamy VMAs performance. During rehearsal, the documentary shows them kissing. “I love you,” Cabello tells Mendes. “Do you know that?” Watch it here. The pair are also shown singing John Mayer’s “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” in the bathroom before their iconic “Señorita” performance.
- Prior to getting together, Mendes truly valued their friendship. “For the past, like, four years, just being friends and not being able to see each other very often to finally being able to be together, she was always there to look out for me as a human being,” he said during the documentary. “She’s got my back, and I think that’s what your partner is for.”
