Melania Trump’s Former Advisor Speaks Out About the Infamous ‘I Really Don’t Care’ Jacket

Written by on August 29, 2020

Remember the “I really don’t care” jacket? I didn’t even have to mention Melania Trump and you probably instantly understood the reference. But now we may have more insight into the controversy, thanks to a former senior advisor. In June 2018, the First Lady traveled to Texas to visit children separated from their families at the U.S. border. But it wasn’t just the trip or her husband’s immigration policies that made headlines—it was an item of clothing. Melania chose to wear a $39 Zara jacket with a striking message written across the back: “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?”The meaning behind the jacket took on many forms. At the time, Stephanie Grisham, the First Lady’s communications director, insisted that it was “just a jacket.” President Trump tweeted that it was a message for the “Fake News Media.” That August, a source told the New York Times that it was “directed at anyone—both outside and inside the White House—who wanted to criticize her decision to visit the children in light of the administration’s aggressive immigration policies.”Melania’s former friend, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, has her own insight. In her new book, Melania & Me: The Rise and Fall of My Friendship with the First Lady, the former senior advisor says Melania just…doesn’t care. David Wolkoff, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, Melania Trump, and Donald Trump in February 2008.
Patrick McMullan“I’m driving liberals crazy,” Melania reportedly told Wolkoff, according to her book. “You know what? They deserve it.” Melania supposedly said that people “connect stuff to my clothes,” but she wears what she wears “because I like it.”“They all went crazy about the zero-tolerance policy at the border. But they don’t know what’s going on. The kids I met were brought in by coyotes, the bad people who are trafficking, and that’s why the kids were put in shelters,” Melania reportedly continued to Wolkoff, per Vanity Fair. “They’re not with their parents, and it’s sad. But the patrols told me the kids say, ‘Wow, I get a bed? I will have a cabinet for my clothes?’ It’s more than they have in their own country where they sleep on the floor. They are taking care nicely there. Did Michelle Obama go to the border? She never did. Show me the pictures!”That’s not the only revelation from Melania & Me, which comes out on September 1. Per the New York Times, Wolkoff described a phone call with Melania following surgery for a “benign kidney condition” in May 2018. Discussing media speculation over her month-long “disappearance” from the public, Melania reportedly said, “‘Face lift? I’m too scared!’‘Nervous breakdown?’ I’m like, seriously? They don’t even know me.’” Wolkoff then recalls Melania quoting a friend who told her, “You give people nervous breakdown, you don’t have it your own!”Read More
