I have no desire to watch Mr. Shue cover “WAP.”

It’s no secret that I LOVE Glee. Did it age well? Not particularly, but damn it if I don’t love those New Directions.

Fox

HOWEVER, that being said, I am also of the belief that Glee is a show very much of its time and does NOT belong in 2020. MOSTLY, because I have no desire to hear Glee covers of some of the boppin’ songs we’ve gotten in the past few years.

Fox

So, here’s a list of the songs I’m so glad Glee never got a chance to cover:

1.

“WAP” by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion:

Atlantic, Fox

First of all, I do not want a censored version of this song. Second of all, I do NOT want to see Rachel attempt the “WAP” dance in order to reclaim her sexuality a la “Oops…I Did It Again.”

2.

“Watermelon Sugar” by Harry Styles:

Erskine / Columbia, Fox

Does Blaine have the voice of an angel? Yes. Do I want to hear anyone aside from Harry sing this song? No.

3.

“Boy with Luv” by BTS ft. Halsey:

Big Hit, Fox

There’s no doubt in my mind that they’d make Tina Cohen-Chang take the lead on this one and there’s no doubt in my mind that it would be offensive as hell.

4.

“Formation” by Beyoncé:

Parkwood, Fox

Rachel would try to fight Mercedes for the lead on this one and I do not have the energy to watch THAT play out.

5.

“Exile” by Taylor Swift ft. Bon Iver:

Republic, Fox

Marley would sing this song about feeling like an ~outcast~ even though she’s included in everything. No ma’am.

6.

“Tap In” by Saweetie:

Icy / Warner, Fox

Mr. Shue would force the New Directions to do a TikTok dance class to this song and I am shaking just thinking about it.

7.

“Laugh Now, Cry Later” by Drake and Lil Dirk:

OVO, Fox

Mr. Shue would sing this song about Emma or something and no one should have to listen to that.

8.

“Midnight Sky” by Miley Cyrus:

RCA, Fox

I’m not gonna lie, I can see Brit and Mike Chang choreographing some dope dance moves to this song…but what I can’t handle is Kurt making this his eighth-breakup-with-Blaine anthem.

9.

“Say So” by Doja Cat:

RCA, Fox

I can’t explain it…but Artie would def attempt to do this TikTok challenge and become a viral sensation, and it’ll all go to his head, and then the New Directions would have to check his ego before he overdrafts.

10.

“Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish:

Interscope, Fox

They’d make Brittany do this one purely for the “DUH.”

11.

“Physical” by Dua Lipa:

Warner, Fox

Brittany and Quinn would take the lead on this — with Mercedes belting the needed notes — but there’s NO WAY that the New Directions collectively, as a unit, can handle the demands of this song. Vocal Adrenaline, on the other hand…

12.

“Stupid Love” by Lady Gaga:

Interscope, Fox

Two words: “Bad Romance.” We don’t need a reprise.

13.

“Adore You” by Harry Styles:

Erskine / Columbia, Fox

Finn would sing this to win over Rachel after making her upset, but even his dulcet voice wouldn’t be able to do this ballad justice.

14.

“Sucker” by Jonas Brothers:

Republic, Fox

Remember the Justin Bieber episode? Yeah, do we need to see Sam, Finn, Puck, Artie, and Mike Chang do that with the JoBros? Methinks not.

15.

“Señorita” by Shawn Mendes and Camila Mendes:

Island / Epic, Fox

I can tell you what I don’t need, and it’s Rachel and Playboy Brody doing a ~sensual~ cover to this song and having Finn walk in during the middle of it.

16.

“Kings & Queens” by Ava Max:

Atlantic, Fox

Marley, Kitty, and Unique would do a trio for SURE and it just wouldn’t pack the same punch, ya know?

17.

“My Shot” from Hamilton:

Disney+, Fox

Grease, West Side Story, Rocky Horror Picture Show…I’m sorry, but I will not allow for Hamilton to get added to the ranks of musicals performed at William McKinley High.

18.

“Motivation” by Normani:

Keep Cool / RCA, Fox

Brittany could do the choreo, Mercedes could handle the vocals, but NEITHER OF THEM can handle both. And there isn’t anyone in the New Directions who could handle both either.

19.

“Blinding Lights” by the Weeknd:

XO / Republic, Fox

Mr. Shue would INSIST on joining the kids on this one and no one should be subjected to that after the “Toxic” debacle.

20.

“Old Town Road” by Lil’ Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus:

Columbia, Fox

I can’t explain how/why…but they would 100% be tone-deaf with this one. I’m getting “krunk club” flashbacks.

21.

“Truth Hurts” by Lizzo:

Atlantic, Fox

…do I really have to explain myself with this one?

22.

“This Is America” by Childish Gambino:

RCA, Fox

See: above.
