Boricua indie-pop duo Buscabulla — consisting of Raquel Berríos and Luis Alfredo Del Valle — has delivered their debut album, Regressa, via Ribbon Music. On the 11-track full-length, the two-piece offers a shimmering rollercoaster of sounds, spotlighting a complex bricolage of emotions that reflects their tumultuous return home following 2017’s Hurricane Maria.
These motifs are starkly represented on Regresa, with a variety of hopeful poetics and rageful underpinnings that epitomize the community’s struggle for hope and representation. “The album reflects the joys of being back but it’s also melancholic,” shared Raquel. “You feel like a stranger in your own home because the island is going through very hard, weird times. Most people our age have fled. We have also changed after being away for so long.” On the tracks, Berríos ruminates about her home with ballad-like hymns atop an entrancing blend of indie rock, R&B, house, disco, funk, and more, equally infusing local Puerto Rican flavor into the production. Listeners will be pleasantly met with hints of reggaeton, bachata, bomba, and more, cementing Regresa’s place as a bittersweet homage to the duo’s roots.
