It’s a pretty big week for new hip hop with great new projects from Ka, Little Simz, and Bishop Nehru, all of which I wrote about in Notable Releases. We also got new songs from Preservation/Navy Blue, Kehlani/James Blake, The Streets, the late Pop Smoke, Ian Isiah/Chromeo, JPEGMAFIA/Denzel Curry, Headie One, Megan Thee Stallion/Major Lazer, Caleb Giles, Gorillaz/Tony Allen/Skepta, and more. Read on for all the rap and R&B songs we posted this week…

PRESERVATION – “NORTH BRIDGE” (FEAT. NAVY BLUE)

Speaking of Ka, the great underground rap producer Preservation (who is Ka’s partner in Dr.Yen Lo) announced a new guest-filled album and the first single is “North Bridge,” which features Navy Blue and should appeal to fans of cinematic ’90s rap. Read more here.

KEHLANI – “GRIEVING” (ft. JAMES BLAKE)

R&B star Kehlani’s new album It Was Good Until It Wasn’t is out today, and among other things, it features this pretty cool duet with James Blake.

SHENSEEA – “BAD HABIT”

Jamaican dancehall singer Shenseea continues to rise (and cross over with American hip hop audiences), and if she keeps putting out super fun songs like “Bad Habit,” her rise won’t be stopping any time soon.

SHEFF G – “NO SUBURBAN PT. 2″

Sheff G has been one of the biggest breakouts in New York drill, and it’s not hard to hear why – this new single is great. It’s off his upcoming debut album One And Only, due next week (May 15 via EMPIRE).

THE STREETS – “WHERE THE FUCK DID APRIL GO”

“Where the fuck did April go?” is right. And yes, this was very much written in response to the pandemic. Mike Skinner says, “I wrote this last week. It’s a weird time isn’t it. We were looking forward to the Summer just like everyone else, festivals and gigs all there, new music, new stage set – but this has taken the wind from everyone’s sails. And none of us know quite how to cope with it all. I just wrote a tune the same way other people might talk to a therapist!”

LIL TJAY – “ZOO YORK” (ft. FIVIO FOREIGN & POP SMOKE)

Lil Tjay’s new State of Emergency project is out now, and especially of note is this song featuring a typically booming verse from the late Pop Smoke.

NAV – “RUN IT UP” (ft. POP SMOKE)

Lil Tjay isn’t the only rapper with a project out today featuring the late Pop Smoke. Weeknd associate NAV’s new Good Intentions features Pop in more of a sing-rap mode than usual on “Run It Up.”

IAN ISIAH – “N.U.T.S.” (prod. CHROMEO)

R&B singer Ian Isiah is releasing a new Chromeo-produced project, AUNTIE, this summer, and the first taste is “N.U.T.S (N*GG* YOU THE SH*T).” With Chromeo’s involvement, Ian deviates from his usual atmospheric R&B style and instead offers up the kind of thumping, psychedelic funk that George Clinton would be proud of.

JPEGMAFIA – “BALD!” (REMIX FT. DENZEL CURRY)

JPEGMAFIA released a new remix of his recent single “BALD!”, which was already a great song, but which is even better now thanks to a fiery new verse from Denzel Curry.

HEADIE ONE – “ROSE GOLD”

UK drill rapper Headie One is fresh off releasing GANG, one of the best rap albums of April, and he’s already back with a new song. GANG features FKA twigs, Jamie xx, Sampha, slowthai, and Octavian, and one of its songs was remixed by Brian Eno, but “Rose Gold” reminds you Headie One doesn’t need big names to help him write instantly satisfying songs.

BERWYN – “GLORY”

Speaking of Headie One’s GANG, London-via-Trinidad musician BERWYN (who did an official remix of GANG‘s title track, and who’s also on the new Everything Is Recorded album) has released the lead single off his upcoming debut project. He handles all the rapping, singing, and production himself, and this kinda sounds like a cross between UK hip hop and early James Blake. It’s very promising stuff.

MEGAN THEE STALLION – “SAVAGE” (MAJOR LAZER REMIX)

First, Megan Thee Stallion’s unstoppable Tik Tok hit “Savage” got a remix with a Beyonce verse, and now it’s got a thumping new edit from Major Lazer.

CALEB GILES – “DIAMONDS”

Experimental New York rapper Caleb Giles continues his recent string of singles with this hazy, head-nod-inducing track that finds him in fine form.

GORILLAZ – “HOW FAR?” (ft. TONY ALLEN & SKEPTA)

Afrobeat legend Tony Allen sadly passed away earlier this week at age 79, and as a tribute to him, Damon Albarn (who Tony played with in The Good The Bad and The Queen) released a song that he and Allen recorded with Skepta shortly before quarantine began. Read more here.

MIGOS – “TACO TUESDAY”

On Cinco de Mayo, Migos released their new song “Taco Tuesday.” The song samples Lebron James.

RMR – “DEALER” (REMIX ft. FUTURE & LIL BABY)

It seems like RMR has been doing the go viral for something ridiculous and then release your more serious music thing, and so far it’s working. This new remix with Future and Lil Baby should help too.

ONEFOUR – “SAY IT AGAIN” (ft. A$AP FERG)

Drill is taking off all over the world, including in Australia, where Sydney group ONEFOUR have been quickly taking off. Maybe they’re about to leave a mark in the US too, ’cause New York rapper A$AP Ferg lends a verse to this new one and he sounds pretty great doing so. He’s got a line about coronavirus on this one, but I sure hope they filmed this video before the outbreak escalated.

PAUL EPWORTH, JAY ELECTRONICA, LIL SILVA – “LOVE GALAXY”

Not only did Jay Electronica finally release an album this year, he also lends a verse to the new cinematic, psychedelic pop single by producer Paul Epworth.
