Study: Recent No. 1 hits are written at third grade reading level

The lyrics of recent Billboard top songs’ lyrics are written at about a third grade level, says a new study by Andrew Powell-Morse.Morse’s study used the Readability Score to grade the lyrics of 225 number one songs from the Billboard Pop, Country, Rock, and R&B/Hip-Hop charts. Morse said any song that spent more than three weeks in the top spot on its respective chart was analyzed for his study. The study starts with songs that were on the charts in 2005 and shows that there has been a decline in the reading level since then. When using the results to map the grade level changes in each genre through the years, R&B/Hip-Hop songs look to be consistently written at a lower reading level.Out of the ten highest scoring songs on the list, five of them were country.Three of the bottom five scored songs were from the R&B/hip-hop genre. The worst scored song went to a rock song.
