A secret police training exercise sparked panic among sleeping residents of a leafy London suburb tonight. 

Loud bangs and low flying helicopters were heard near Mortlake Brewery in Mortlake, south west London, leaving residents shaken from the loud explosions. 

Angry residents quickly took to social media to share the nights’ events, with one describing the peace-shattering sounds as ‘like gunshots’, and pleaded with police to shed some light on what was going on.

Jack Kisby-Carroll wrote: ‘Very loud explosions around 4-6 of them. Helicopters flying all over Mortlake Brewery. No warning of this. All after 11pm.’ 

Topaz Amoore wrote: ‘Military training in a residential area at 11pm? It’s madness. Everyone very shaken by the loud explosion and the low flying helicopter.’
