Hip-Hop Way More Important Than the Beatles & the British Invasion, Study Finds

Sorry, Paul McCartney—it looks like your contribution to Kanye West’s album may be more important than anything you did with that little band you were in 50 years ago.

According to a new scientific study of pop music by the University of London and Imperial College (via The Independent), hip-hop has made a larger impact on pop music than the British Invasion did in 1964.

The study analyzed 17,000 songs, focusing on three separate musical revolutions: the 1991 emergence of rap as a chart force, the synth-based new wave movement of 1983 and the early 1960s British invasion. Researchers used 30-second snippets of roughly 17,000 songs taken from the Billboard Hot 100 charts between 1960 and 2010.
