Nicola Crowle, 16, who was one of dozens of Crookhorn College students to fall ill on a school trip to New York and Washington
What was meant to be a school trip of a lifetime to New York and Washington DC has turned into a nightmare after dozens of British teenagers were taken to hospital.
A total of 48 pupils from Crookhorn College in Waterlooville, near Portsmouth, and three teachers were struck down with what was initially thought to be chronic food poisoning on the US field trip.
While the rest of her classmates are understood to be quarantined at the Harrington Hotel in DC having been discharged, Nicola Crowle, 16, is still on a drip and faces an anxious wait to see if she will passed fit to fly home tomorrow.
Her mother Susan, 56, said the ‘distressed and very upset’ teenager is the only one of the party still in hospital having collapsed because of the illness.
Talking exclusively to MailOnline, her worried mother Mrs Crowle said: ‘She had only been there a day and she felt so ill that paramedics had to be called to treat her.
‘She was taken straight to hospital and she was there for two days.
‘She started feeling better and was transferred to join the rest of the trip in Washington and she collapsed.
‘So she was taken back to hospital there and that’s where she’s been since.’
It’s not clear what caused the sudden illness, but it is believed to be food poisoning or norovirus.
